Steven William Mayer

With heavy hearts and profound sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved Steven William Mayer, age 81, on August 3, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Steven was born in (Manhattan) NYC, and was a first generation American. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. After graduating from the University of Oklahoma, where he met his future wife, Barbara Lerner, they married and made Houston their home. Steven began his career as a special education teacher, and several years later, he decided to enter the business world. He started working in sales for a packaging company where he was highly respected and excelled in his field. In time, Steven and his close friend and business partner established a successful packaging business, Bayou City Packaging Corp., where he loved working with clients and co-workers. He pursued his career with passion, dedication, and a commitment to excellence. Steven was a family man, a loving husband, and an extraordinary father to his three daughters. His devotion to his family was the cornerstone of his life, and his love knew no bounds. He was a constant source of strength and guidance to his children, grandchildren, extended family, and friends. He would teach his daughters and their neighborhood friends how to swim, ride a bike, shoot hoops, or occasionally build a snowman. He supported and encouraged his children and instilled valuable lessons of integrity, perseverance, and love. He was always ready to offer a helping hand, make you smile, or provide a listening ear. Family was everything to Steven. His five grandchildren brought him great joy and happiness. He embraced his role as "grandpa" and treasured trips, sleepovers, fun activities, playing ball and cheering them on at their sporting events. He had a special connection with each grandchild. Steven was a man of many passions. He was a natural athlete and a sports fan, cheering on the OU Sooners and the Houston major league teams. He also played in several sports leagues. He was an avid runner with a highlight of completing the New York City Marathon. He loved spending his free time in nature, fishing trips, and camping with the family. Above all, Steven treasured the company of his loved ones. His warm smile, cheerful personality, and wise words brightened countless lives. Though we mourn the loss of Steven, we also celebrate his life and his impact on us all. We find solace in knowing that his love will forever reside in our hearts, guiding us through life's challenges. We will cherish the beautiful memories shared, and his spirit will continue to inspire us. Steven is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years Barbara, daughters J. Charisse Mayer, Brittany Schaefer, and Hillary Mueller (Craig): his grandchildren Zachary Johnson, Ethan and Alec Schaefer, Paige and Brooke Mueller; along with his brother, Lawrence, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins whom he held dear, and his best friend, Raymond Reiner (Esther). He was preceded in death by his parents, Dora Kahn Mayer and Albert Mayer, and his infant sister, Miriam Mayer. There will be a private funeral service. Steven's life will be honored and remembered at a memorial service on Sunday, August 6, 2023, at 2:00 PM at Congregation Emanu El, 1500 Sunset Blvd., Houston, TX 77005. We invite those whose lives he touched to join the family in honoring his memory. The family requests no flowers and would appreciate contributions to Jewish Family Service, Jewish Children's Regional Services, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, or the Parkinson Society.
