Shelley Lynn Greenman

Shelley Lynn Greenman passed away suddenly on Monday, August 5, 2024, at age 68. She is preceded in death by her mother, Bettie Greenman. She is survived by her husband, Herb Whalley; father, Harry Greenman; brother, Jeffrey Greenman; stepdaughter, Melanie Norris, and husband, David; sisters-in-law, Anna Whalley and Judy Whalley; and brother-in-law, David Whalley, and wife, Jiraporn. A native Houstonian, Shelley graduated from Lamar High School and The University of Texas at Austin where she earned a bachelor’s degree in education and made lifelong friends through the AEPhi sorority. She later received her master’s degree in education from the University of Houston. Inspired by her passion for helping others, she enjoyed a long professional career in education, primarily teaching students with special needs. Shelley was a vibrant and outgoing spirit, who was a friend to all. Her genuine character and gift for conversation made people of all ages and backgrounds feel valued and welcomed. She was also an animal lover and would beam when talking about her beloved cats. She delighted in giving back to her community. In addition to volunteering at Congregation Or Ami, West Houston Assistance Ministries (WHAM), and other organizations, perhaps her greatest joy was fostering kittens she brought home from the vet, who would sometimes find their way into her home permanently. After retirement, Shelley reconnected with her faith at Or Ami, where she took pride in reading Torah and engaging with the congregation. It was there that she met her husband, Herb, whom she married in 2018. Shelley and Herb pursued a shared love of travel, theater, and even baseball, which Shelley grew to appreciate throughout their time together. She was an avid reader who loved puzzles and word games and had an adventurous personality. She wasn’t afraid of a challenge, whether it was scuba diving, running a marathon, or solo traveling. Shelley will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of love, kindness, and compassion will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind. The funeral service will take place on Friday, August 9, 2024, at 10:00 am in the Proler Chapel at Congregation Beth Israel Memorial Garden, 1101 Antoine Drive, Houston, Texas 77055, followed by a shiva minyan at Congregation Or Ami, 3443 Wilcrest Drive, Houston, Texas 77042.
