Ruth Jeanette Karren

Ruth Jeanette Karren passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 15, 2025, at the age of 94 in Houston, Texas. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who loved her family very much. She was deeply loved by her family. She staged and directed many musicals, and she composed many poems. She had a love of music and the arts, and she was able to use it to develop young people and their talents. Ruth was born in San Antonio, Texas on November 24, 1930. Her family moved to Corpus Christi, Texas to open a retail store when she was young. She went to public school in Corpus Christi, and there she met her future husband, Sidney Karren. They married when she was just 17 years old and went on to have three beautiful children. They were married for 52 years until he passed away in 2003. Ruth worked for Southwestern Bell for over 20 years before she retired. Ruth is survived by her son, Larry Karren, and his wife, Melissa Karren, her two daughters, Lynn Karren and Janet Newbrough, and Janet’s husband, Dr. Steve Newbrough. Her son, Larry, has three children and two stepchildren: Jami (Adam) Lazarov, Adam (Haley) Karren, Tori Karren, Jeffrey (Divya) Heyman and Olivia (David) Flood. Her daughter, Janet, has two sons: Jeffrey (Cydney) Newbrough and Ryan (Lorena) Newbrough. Ruth had seven great-grandchildren with an eighth on the way. She was so proud of all her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by her brothers-in-law, Howard Karren and Jerry Karren. Family was so important to her, and she thought very fondly of their children which includes Mark and Charisse Schechter, Gary and Debra Loeffel, Charles and Diana Karren, Geoff Karren, and Jerry Karren’s wife, Marilyn Karren. Ruth was very fortunate to have several caregivers that gave her such wonderful care. Her caregivers were led by Mirna Jennings with the help of Carmen Miralda and Edna M. Doumoulin. The family is so appreciative for the wonderful care they gave to their mother. A funeral service will take place on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at 11:00 am in the Kagan-Rudy Chapel at Emanu El Memorial Park, 8341 Bissonnet Street, Houston, Texas 77074. Donations in Ruth’s memory should be made to either the ASPCA, www.aspca.org, or the American Heart Association, www.heart.org.
