Rae Sampson

Rae Sampson, born on March 24, 1928, in Texarkana, Texas, died peacefully on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Rae was the second youngest among ten children; she had seven brothers and two sisters. Her brother, Herman Sklar, is the sole surviving sibling. She is preceded in death by her parents, Bertha, and Louis Sklar. Rae's kindness, friendliness, and unwavering commitment to family were the cornerstones of her life. Rae's journey took a beautiful turn when she met Eugene Sampson (of blessed memory) at a party, and it was truly love at first sight. They embarked on a lifelong journey together-67 wonderful years to be exact, building a family filled with love and laughter. Together, Rae and Eugene were blessed with three children—Mamie Marx, Esther Burck, and Lewis Sampson. Rae's role as a mother was nothing short of extraordinary. Her nurturing spirit, unconditional love, and selflessness made her a wonderful Mom, Grandma, and Great Grandma. Rae was not only a loving family woman but also a trailblazer ahead of her time in the business world. In the early 1960’s, she collaborated with the Harris County Sheriff's Department to create a pioneering business aimed at catching hot check writers. Years later, she embraced the concept of working from home doing collections for Herman Hospital before it became a common practice. Rae is survived by her loving children: Mamie Marx, Esther Burck (and the late Jeff Burck), and Lew Sampson and wife Rita. She leaves behind a legacy of warmth and compassion through her four grandchildren—Jared Burck, Carrie Wolf and husband Mark, Adam Burck and wife Robyn, and Kevin Burck and wife Sabrina. Rae was also fortunate to have eight great-grandchildren, with one more on the way next month—Brandon, Hudson, and Hannah Wolf, Riley, Asher, Corey, Jeffrey, and Reid Burck. She always looked forward to being with her family. She loved when her grandchildren and great grandchildren would come by the Medallion and visit. She will forever be remembered as a sweet and loving woman who never met a stranger. We would like to thank all the fabulous staff at her home, The Medallion, her caretakers who cared for her until the end of her life, and the wonderful staff at Houston Hospice whose compassion and dedication made her last moments as comfortable as possible. Donations may be made in her memory to United Orthodox Synagogue or to the charity of your choice. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2024, at 2:30 PM at Adath Israel Cemetery, 4700 Airline Dr., Houston, TX 77022. Honored to escort their grandmother to her final resting place, Jared Burck, Adam Burck, and Kevin Burck will be the honorary pallbearers. A Shiva Minyan will take place following the graveside service at 6:00 PM at The Medallion, 6262 Braeswood Blvd., Houston, TX 77074 (located next to Seven Acres). All are welcome, and valet car service will be provided.
