Myrtle Mae Koushel

Murrel Koushel, beloved mother, sister, grandmother and aunt passed peacefully on June 8, 2016,surrounded by loving family. She was born, Pollok, TX, to William Lucian Warren and Dollie Hadaway Warren on November 28, 1920, the second oldest with 7 brothers. At the age of 14, she took on the responsibility of raising, loving, and supporting her younger brothers when their mother passed away in the midst of the Great Depression. Her brothers credited her for holding the home together. Although her formal schooling stopped at that age, she always read and wanted to learn more. In 1949, she moved to Houston and become part of the original staff of the world-famous Shamrock Hotel. There she met the love of her life, Max. They enjoyed going to shows and the opera. He used to tell her that "for a Piney Woods girl, she sure has a filet mignon taste!" They were married for 52 years until his death in 2002. She and Max wanted to make sure that their daughters got the education that they never had. When she learned that Bellaire had excellent schools, she wasted no time in moving the family across town. Murrel was a purposeful woman, probably due to the fact that she had very little time for leisure growing up. She instilled in her daughters that work came way before pleasure, and one should plan for the future, whether it be love, finances, or education. She enjoyed gardening, travel club, and spoiling the light of her life, her granddaughter. Murrel leaves behind her twin daughters Shana Bauman (Ed) and Martha Raskin (Steven), granddaughter Miriam, her brothers J. Edward Warren, H. Jerry Warren (Darceille), and Jirrel D. Warren (Eleanor) and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Max, her parents, and brothers: Sammie L. Warren, A.C. Warren, William C. Warren, and Culberson Warren.
