Michael Alan Levine, M.D.

Michael Alan Levine, M.D., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at the age of 91. Born on February 14, 1934, in Brooklyn, New York to Jack and Shirley Levine—both first-generation Americans—Michael’s life was marked by intellectual curiosity, service to his country, professional excellence, and a deep love of adventure. A gifted and precocious child, Michael skipped two grades in school and went on to graduate in the top five percent of his class at Benjamin Franklin High School in Rochester, New York. He pursued pre-med studies at Cornell University on an NTS Regents Scholarship, and his academic distinction earned him early admission to Northwestern University in Chicago, where he earned his BS in Medicine in 1954 and his MD in 1957. Michael began his medical career with an internship at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City before joining the U.S. Air Force as a Flight Surgeon and Captain. His military service took him from the icy refueling bases of Goose Bay, Labrador, to the B-52 wings of Turner Air Force Base in Georgia. He also earned his pilot’s license during this time, an achievement that reflected his boundless curiosity and drive. He continued to serve in the Air Force Reserve and was activated during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Following residencies in Miami and Houston, Michael completed an NIH Fellowship in Gastroenterology. He spent the next 35 years practicing medicine in Houston’s renowned Medical Center. A respected and accomplished physician, he was Board Certified in both Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine. He was also a Fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Gastroenterology, a member of multiple professional societies, and a founding member of the Texas Gastroenterological Society. Beyond medicine, Michael lived life with great enthusiasm. An avid traveler, he explored nearly every corner of the globe—from the mountains of New Zealand, the vineyards of France, the ruins of Greece temples and the exotic cities of South America. He visited all but two U.S. states and had a special love for alpine skiing. After retiring, he moved to Breckenridge, Colorado, where he skied almost daily well into his 80s, embracing the mountain lifestyle with the same passion he brought to his work. Michael was known for his wit, intellect, and engaging conversation. A lifelong learner and storyteller, he authored more than 1,200 humorous essays and limericks during retirement, sharing them with a devoted circle of friends and family. His writing reflected the same sharp mind and warm spirit that made him a beloved father, friend, and companion. He is survived by his three daughters—Beth Hammond, Diane Sanchez and Gail Vannaman—six grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. He also shared many years of deep friendship and loving companionship with Lucilla Hoover, who remained by his side with steadfast devotion until his final day. Michael lived a full and adventurous life, guided by intelligence, compassion, and a deep appreciation for the world around him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
