Helen Flowers Simkin

Helen Flowers Simkin, age 98, passed away peacefully on Monday, September 25, 2023. Helen was born on November 19, 1924, in Lexington, Mississippi, to Samuel and Flora Cohen Flowers. While attending Sophie Newcomb College as a music major in 1942, Helen met Samuel Simkin, a surgical resident at Touro Hospital in New Orleans. Helen and Samuel married two years later in Memphis, Tennessee. They were married for 58 years. In 1953, Helen, Sam, and their four young children moved to Houston where Sam established his medical practice. Using the pseudonym "Mrs. Flowers", Helen kept Sam's office running smoothly for years. While Sam was building his practice, Helen's life centered around her children and their activities. Her southern hospitality and gracious demeanor made the family's South Braeswood house a welcoming second home to their many teenage friends. Helen had many passions. She treasured her lifelong friends. She could often be found on the golf course or at a spirited game of bridge or mah jongg. The ultimate sports fanatic, Helen cheered for all of her favorite teams. Helen and Sam loved traveling with friends or with their children. Cross-country road trips to national parks will remain treasured memories of the Simkin family. Helen and Sam's loving, supportive relationship remains their legacy. As parents, they were a source of unconditional love and a priceless gift for their future generations. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Samuel Simkin, her beloved son, Sandy, and her cherished brother, Philip Flowers. She will be greatly missed by her three daughters and their husbands, Judy and Marc Herzstein, Rhonda and Seth Freedman, and Sherri and Bob Carabello. Helen's grandchildren, Kimberly and Marc Glenn, Ryan and Jamie Simkin, Brooke and Dan Feather, Hayley Herzstein, Megan and John Cruz, Rebecca Freedman and Ryan West, and Zachary and Molly Freedman, gave her endless joy. Her nine great grandchildren, Jonah, Asher, and Isabella Glenn, Lily and Brette Feather, Emma and Abigail West, August Cruz, and Aurora Freedman, will miss their "Mimi". Helen was a beloved aunt to Amy Flowers and will be fondly remembered by her daughters-in-law Ilene Allen and Amanda Arnold. The family is forever grateful to Yvonne Hardy and Brededier Grant for their companionship and loving care. A private family service for Helen was held at Emanu El Memorial Park, 8341 Bissonnet St., Houston, TX 77074.
