Gwen Helaine Appelson

Gwen Helaine Appelson, a life-long baseball fan, passed away on February 28, 2020. She was born August 10, 1937 to Irving and Miriam Strohl in Philadelphia, PA. Her favorite pastime was going to Philadelphia Phillies baseball games with her dad. Above all, Gwen's greatest joy was spending time with her children and grandchildren, celebrating Jewish holidays and traveling to Colorado, Phoenix, Israel and Italy. There were many fond memories of beach vacations and summertime at Atlantic City, NJ. Gwen's organizational and retail skills served her well throughout her work life. She owned Concepts in Candy, a home-based gourmet chocolate gift and delivery service. Her children confessed to eating chocolates, each remembering their favorites. She then went on to manage Happy Happy Hallmark at the local mall, where her daughter Suzanne was a part-time employee. At the age of 50, Gwen joined JC Penney as an Executive Assistant in the Corporate Buying Office. She took pride in her awards for perfect attendance. She also worked nights and weekends as a receptionist for Weight Watchers after achieving her lifetime membership. Gwen created a welcoming environment and educated members on the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Her gracious and generous demeanor was woven throughout her life time. She had a passion for helping others, from volunteering at Medical City Hospital to ushering at the Addison Theatre, to her membership in National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW), a service organization. Gwen met her most dear friends at NCJW. She was an avid Mahjongg player, quietly winning many games. Her children shared stories of Gwen's famous nosh drawer where they could always find pretzels, licorice and chips. Gwen had a sense of humor without trying to be funny. In her time at Traditions Senior Living, Gwen's kind spirit and grace touched so many caregivers and staff. The caregivers truly loved their mama. Gwen amazed us all with her inner strength. When Gwen was called Home, she was greeted above by her parents, Miriam and Irving Strohl; and her two husbands, Bill Miller and Ed Appelson.
