Gerald Fanarof

Gerald Fanarof, 80, passed away at home, surrounded by loved ones, on Friday, February 23, 2024, in Houston, TX. Gerald was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa on August 25th, 1943 to the late Lazarus and Doris Fanarof. Gerald graduated from the University of the Witswatersrand medical school in 1968. He and his family moved to Houston, TX in 1977 where he became a naturalized citizen and did his Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine Fellowship at Baylor College of Medicine. Gerald practiced medicine until 2015 when he retired. Gerald loved to laugh, crack jokes, and make up countries and characters for his children. He was never happier than at a cocktail party, grazing from the food tables and chatting to friends. He has the loudest and most infectious laugh and laughed hardest at his own jokes. Gerald loved to travel with his beloved wife, Beverly, and their dear friends. He knew everything about everything and could tell you any fact you wanted to know, He could speak backwards and his daughters never tired of asking him to repeat things they said. He loved classical music and animals and rarely ordered his own meal at a restaurant as he was constantly picking off of everyone else’s plates. He loved his family above all and shared an exceptional bond with his younger sister, Sandra and her family. His girls were his life and he was never happier than when the family was all together. He and his wife shared special relationships with their beloved friends in Houston and around the world. One of his greatest joys was walking his daughter down the aisle at her wedding and finally having another male in his immediate family. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his beloved wife, Beverly; his two daughters, Daniella and husband Ben Steinberg and Justine, his sister Sandra and her children Gaby Lutrin, her husband John and their daughters Aimee and Ally; and Jarred Collet and his children Benjamin, Maya and Aliya. The family would like to express a deep appreciation to Gerald’s long time caregivers, Loretta Nagy and Adriana Belisle for their love and kindness and to Hospice who made his last weeks and days comfortable. A funeral service will be held in the Bender Memorial Chapel at 2:00 PM on Sunday, February 25, 2024, at Beth Yeshurun Post Oak, 7445 Awty School Lane, Houston, TX 77005. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Amazing Place which provided so much love and support to the family.
