Ellen Lowe

Ellen Lowe, 76, loving wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away after a short illness on Saturday, October 8, 2022 in South Lake Tahoe. Ellen was born on November 15, 1945, in Brooklyn, New York, to parents Martin (z"l) and C. Lorraine Hoffinger. Ellen married Richard Lowe in 1963 and they moved to Houston in November of 1980. They opened Martel's Pool Supply and together raised two children, Martin Lowe and Elise Newman. Taking after her parents, Ellen nourished a strong love for Judaism and the State of Israel. She participated on the Houston Hillel board of directors, was Women's Division Chair of Israel Bonds Houston, and was a Jewish Federation Lion of Judah. She also supported many Jewish and pro-Israel organizations including AIPAC, Friends of the IDF, and Hadassah. Ellen was an active supporter of Chabad Lake Tahoe, where she and Richard spend their summers. A woman of great poise, Ellen's beautifully large personality preceded her. She enjoyed participating in local events, reading, and redecorating her home, a project that was never finished. She collected Lladro figurines and Judaica, which were displayed prominently throughout her home. Ellen was preceded in death by her father, Martin Hoffinger, and sister, Goldie Bershad. She is survived by her mother, C. Lorraine Hoffinger, husband Richard Lowe, children Martin (Katrina) Lowe, and Elise (Mark) Newman, and sisters Candace (Peter) Caplin and Joyce (Steven) Bloom. Ellen was blessed with six grandchildren, Jessica (David) Browne, Jordan Lowe, Julia (Ryan) Steinberg, Elliot Newman, Miles Newman, and Aaron Newman, and one great-granddaughter, London Browne. Known as "Nana" to her grandchildren, she loved them with all her heart. A funeral service was held on Thursday, October 13, 2022 at 2:00 pm in The Bender Memorial Chapel at Beth Yeshurun Post Oak Cemetery, 7445 Awty School Ln., Houston, Texas 77055.
