Rabbi Sue Levy

Rabbi Sue E. Levy died peacefully on Saturday, January 7, 2023. Born March 1, 1943 and raised in Philadelphia, PA, she dreamed of becoming a Rabbi from the time she was 17. Her dream was achieved finally with the support of her husband and children in 1986, when she was ordained by the Reconstructionist Rabbincal College in Philadelphia. She then served Congregation Beth Shalom of Dover, DE, Congregation Shaar HaShalom of Houston, TX, and Congregation Temple Israel of Duluth, MN before illness forced her into early retirement. Along with serving Shaar HaShalom in Houston she also taught in the Melton School, and helped develop programs at Jewish Family Service for Jews in Recovery. Rabbi Sue as many called her was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She was an inspiration to many. She leaves behind her two daughters Abigail Eliezer, and Miriam Oberstein, and their husband's Eitan Eliezer and Allan Oberstein, her two grandchildren, Adam and Adar Eliezer, and her brother Jon Edelman. She is preceded in death by her parents, sister, and Husband, Irwin Levy. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her memory to Jewish Family Service of Houston, The Southern Poverty Law Center, and the Anti Defamation League of Houston. A funeral service was held on Monday, January 9, 2023 in The Kagan-Rudy Chapel at Emanu El Memorial Park, 8341 Bissonnet St., Houston, Texas, 77074.
