Stuart Miller

Stuart Michael Miller passed away on Sunday, May 4, 2025, in the loving company of his children, Melanie Miller and Josh and Tamar Miller, his brother and sister, Fred Miller and Valerie Novy, and his spouse, Lolly Friedman Miller. He was the adored and adoring grandfather of Avigail, Chava, Yocheved, Hadassah, and Efraim Miller. He is also survived by Melanie and Josh’s mother, Rosalee Berwald, and his nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephew, each of whom was very special to him. Stuart was born on July 20, 1949, in Mobile, Alabama, to Leatrice and David Miller, each of blessed memory. He enjoyed a very happy childhood, sharing paper routes with Fred, participating In Boy Scouts activities and even attending a Jamboree in Virginia, lifeguarding at the Mobile Country Club (You can imagine why he especially liked this job.), hanging out with his friends in the Walton Avenue neighborhood, and spending time with his grandparents, aunts and uncles, and many, many cousins. He attended the University of Alabama and the University of Houston, during which time he served in the U.S.A.F. Reserves, and after which, he graduated with an accounting degree from The University of Texas. After using his accounting degree for a few years working at a subsidiary of Pennzoil, under the mentorship of his friend, Guy Cordell, he opened Alief Vacuum & Sewing Center, a business that he successfully operated for close to 50 years, stopping only a few weeks before his death. Stuart made great friends in all the places where he worked and played, and he stayed in touch with many of them all his life. Stuart loved the water. As a boy, he was a competitive diver and, in adulthood, he enjoyed scuba diving, especially with Fred and Josh. He became a pickleballer when that craze took off and even played with an oxygen concentrator on his back when his lungs began to falter. He also loved fast cars. His 2022 Mid-Engine Corvette was his pride and joy. His other loves included good deals, fast food, and anything fried. He will be remembered for his sweet smile and twinkling eyes, his quiet charity, and his unique sense of humor that left others, and most importantly himself, laughing. In the spring of 2018, Stuart was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, a disease for which there is presently no cure. He was fortunate to receive a lung transplant in the winter of 2023. Unfortunately, despite his valiant efforts and those of Dr. Rahat Hussain and his transplant team at Memorial Hermann Hospital, after 17 months under the influence of immuno-suppressing anti-rejection drugs, Stuart’s lungs failed him. The family is very grateful for the brilliant, dedicated, and compassionate care that Stuart received from his team and all the nurses and other professionals who took care of him at the Hospital and for the outpouring of love and support from his family members and friends.
