Russell Jay Simon

Russell Jay Simon passed away peacefully on November 15, 2022, surrounded by his family in Houston, Texas. He was born in West Orange, New Jersey, on October 26,1932 to Raphael and Mollie (nee Margoles) Simon. Russ was the youngest of his brothers, Dick and Jerry. He graduated Seton Hall University and followed his longtime friend Bill Rafferty to Houston seeking work and adventure. After trying several other paths, Russell pursued a career in real estate working at Shindler and Cummings and later opening his own firm RJS Development with his brother Jerry. Russell met his wife, Barbara Jones, on a blind date, and after an extended courtship, they were married on December 10, 1961. Together they raised their daughter Rachel, and son Jeff and enjoyed many adventures in their six decades of marriage. Russell had a passion for cars, sailing, and traveling. He loved being on the water and owned boats, most notably a sailboat that he and Barbara sailed to explore many distant parts of the world. A man who drew his energy from being with others, Russell was known for his ability to make and nurture friendships. He was generous with his time and his support of friends and relatives. He also made time to serve on professional and charitable boards. However, his greatest pride was his family, with whom he enjoyed celebrating occasions and just spending time. He particularly loved being a grandparent to his only grandchild, Santana. Russell is predeceased by his parents, Raphael and Mollie Simon, and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Richard (Ann) and Gerald (Marjorie). He is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughter, Rachel; son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey (Dana Hart); granddaughter, Santana; and extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins. A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, November 20, 2022 at at 12:30 pm at Congregation Beth Israel, 5600 N. Braeswood, Houston, Texas, 77096 In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Russell's name to Jewish Family Service Houston or the charity of your choice.
