Roslyn Unger

Roslyn Unger passed away peacefully on March 5, 2026, at the age of 100, just five weeks shy of her 101st birthday. Roslyn lived her life with remarkable energy, passion, and an undeniable love of family, friends, and community. She was an inspiration to all who knew her and a shining example of how to live life with enthusiasm, kindness, humility, and joy. Roslyn was born on April 13, 1925, in Los Angeles, California. At a young age, she moved with her parents, Pauline and Max Thurston, and her two brothers, Sydney and Teddy (both deceased), to Brooklyn, New York. In 1936, the family relocated to Miami Beach, Florida, where Roslyn graduated from Miami Beach Senior High School. After graduation, Roslyn began her career as a legal secretary and later went on to serve as administrator then director of the Jewish National Fund, Miami Beach Division, a position she held for 38 years. During her tenure, she traveled to Israel many times and had the honor of meeting notable leaders including Prime Minister Golda Meir, David Ben-Gurion, and General Moshe Dayan. Roslyn and her beloved husband, Paul Arthur Unger (deceased), eventually retired and moved to Houston, Texas, to be closer to family. In Houston, they became deeply involved in their community. Together they volunteered for more than 20 years in the ICU at St. Luke’s Hospital. They were devoted members of Congregation Beth Yeshurun, where Roslyn volunteered in the synagogue gift shop and for many years warmly welcomed congregants as a smiling greeter before Friday night services. In 2019, Roslyn moved to Brookdale Galleria, where she continued to live actively and joyfully. She loved knitting, reading, attending social events, and playing cards. One of her favorite activities was performing with Brookdale’s traveling kazoo group, 'Off Our Rockers,' which entertained audiences at schools, hospitals, and community events throughout Houston. Roslyn lived her life full of energy and love for her family and friends. She was the light of their lives and will be remembered for her beauty, warmth, generosity, and the joy she brought to everyone around her. She is survived by her three children and their spouses, five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She is lovingly remembered by her children: Maureen and Gary Tucker; Hilary Unger and Mark Burlingame; and Danny Shain. She was a cherished grandmother to Mia and Dan Kennedy, Ilana Shain, Erica and Adi Weinberg, and Mari and Preston Hershkowitz; and a proud great-grandmother to Noah, Sophie, and Toby Weinberg, and Avery and Dylan Kennedy. She was also beloved and remembered by many cousins, nephews, nieces, and extended family in California, Florida, North Carolina, New Jersey, and New York. A funeral service celebrating Roslyn’s remarkable life will be held on Thursday, March 19, 2026, at 11:00 am in the Sophia and Jack Bender Memorial Chapel at Beth Yeshurun Post Oak Cemetery, 7445 Awty School Lane, Houston, Texas 77055.
