Randall Holste

Randall Jay Holste, 60, died Monday, May 15, 2017 at his home. He is survived by his wife of 22 years, Catherine Sanesi Holste, his children Gregory and Madeline, his sister Janet Cheetham with her husband Jack Cheetham and their children Daniel Cheetham and Stephanie Cheetham Forrest with her husband Christopher and their baby Samuel, his niece Danielle Holste with her children Elijah, Janelle and Aubree, his aunt Ruth Stevenson, his aunt Doris Levin, and numerous loving cousins and close friends. Born in Galveston and raised in Houston, he was the youngest of three children in a close-knit and generous family. He graduated from Bellaire High School in 1975, then attended Southwest Texas at San Marcos for two years. When he finally got serious about engineering, he transferred to University of Houston and got his Bachelor's Degree in Engineering in 1980. He worked alongside his father Fred every day at Holste and Associates, Inc from then until Fred passed in 2013. Randy met Catherine his wife, via mutual friends, in 1992 while she was at Baylor College of Medicine. They married June 4, 1994 in Houston. He began his MBA at U of H while she was in her Ob-Gyn residency at Hermann Hospital, so they were very busy and happy together, sometimes "passing like ships in the night". They had their son Gregory in June of 1998, and he so loved being a dad. He and Cat built the townhomes in which they lived that same year, as the CatRanCo team. Madeline came along in September 2001, and the years of raising young kids were again busy and happy for them. Randy, being so social and outgoing, was a favorite in the Shlenker and Emery carpool lines, as he took the kids to school daily until they were old enough to drive. Randy's big brother Barry passed away suddenly in May 2006, which took away his jovial demeanor for a while. Randy enjoyed his family life and happy distractions such as racing cars, collecting and testing audio/stereo equipment, letting the kids entertain him with their talents like Maddy's singing and Greg's piano, and loving on the dogs Bella and Tucker all day long. After he lost his dad Fred in 2013 and his dear mom Celia in 2014, he struggled with grief terribly, though no one would know it from his outward demeanor. He decided last year to wind down the engineering portion of his family companies, Holste and Associates, Inc. This was especially difficult because of his dad having started the company and his being proud of the family name, but was a solid thoughtful decision. He remained an active member of the Texas Board of Professional Engineers. Being semi-retired in recent months allowed Randy to be more available and present for his family, and after some hard grief and emotional health treatment, he became the man he was before. He loved seeing the kids flourish in school and develop their talents. He returned to telling jokes, having creative ideas, being hyper and funny, wanting to go to every concert, reconnecting with old friends, working in a more active role for the real estate company, spoiling Cat with crazy gifts, napping with the dogs, and being involved daily with his amazing kids. Randy just enjoyed a wonderful 60th birthday bash with friends, jazz and fun in April. Gregory just returned from his first year away at college, so the family was enjoying an idyllic weekend together right before his accident on Monday. Greg and Maddy embody the gifts and values of their father - kindness, honesty, silliness, love of science, math and dogs, curiosity, wonder, and full-hearted love. His service will be held Thursday, May 18, 2017 at 10:00am at Emanu El Memorial Park at 8341 Bissonnet in Houston, officiated by Rabbi Pamela Silk.
