Lester Harvey Slobin

Lester Harvey Slobin of Houston, Texas, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 11, 2022, surrounded by his family. Lester was born in Columbus, Ohio on March 5, 1942. Lester met the love of his life, Marlene Novak Slobin, in high school, and they started dating soon after she graduated. Over the past month, he delightedly told numerous friends who visited how he has loved her since the moment they met. They married on August 15, 1965, and celebrated their 57th anniversary this year. He studied Finance at The Ohio State University and attended law school at South Texas College of Law. He loved telling stories about his experiences as a Houston municipal court judge. For most of his career, he practiced real estate law with his older brother, Sanford Slobin. He was most proud of his sons, Scott and Todd, and his three grandchildren, who affectionately called him “GP.” He found joy in simple pleasures, such as eating hamburgers and Reese’s peanut butter cups, watching his grandson play baseball, relaxing at home with the Astros on TV, and walking his beloved dogs while wearing a baseball cap and snazzy sneakers. He was the sweetest man; to know him was to love him. Lester was preceded in death by his parents, Anne and Philip Slobin. He is survived by his wife, Marlene, son Scott Slobin and wife Pam, son Todd Slobin and wife Stephanie, grandchildren Ava, Sam and Ziva, brother Sanford and wife Carol, sister-in-law Cindy Friedman, sister-in-law Susanne Robins and husband Gerry, many nieces, nephews and cousins, and the sweetest dog, Ollie. Dad and GP, you led by example with your kindness to others. We are so proud to be your children and grandchildren. You always supported us and celebrated our successes. We love you and will miss you always. The family is grateful to Dr. Jonathan Magid for his compassionate care of Lester and for his friendship. The family is also grateful to Rabbi Oren Hayon, Rabbi Pam Silk, Cantor Rollin Simmons, and dear family and friends who have been a source of support and comfort over the past month. A graveside service was held on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, at 2pm at Emanu El Memorial Park, 8341 Bissonnet, Houston, Texas 77074. Rabbi Hayon and Cantor Simmons officiated. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Lester’s memory be made to the Houston Area Parkinson Society (https://hapsonline.org) or the Clergy Good Works Fund at Congregation Emanu El.
