Larry Alan Wainer

Larry Alan Wainer passed away peacefully on June 16, 2021. Larry was born in Chicago to the late Ben and Adele Wainer. At 9 years old, Larry and his family left the harsh winters of the Midwest for the year-round summer weather in McAllen, Texas. After graduating from McAllen High School, Larry attended the University of Texas at Austin and received a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Texas at Austin School of Law. After beginning his legal career working for the IRS and Department of Energy, Larry joined The Coastal Corporation, where he spent a long and highly respected career, rising to assistant general counsel, until his retirement in 2005. He enjoyed his work immensely and even in retirement he continued to consult with other energy interests. After graduating from The University of Texas, Larry remained an avid Texas Longhorn fan throughout his life, cheering on the 'Horns no matter what their ranking was; this was a joy and a tradition that he shared with his entire family, as a season ticket holder for home games in Austin, and gathered together with a family full of Texas Exes at holidays. Larry enjoyed traveling the world for business and for pleasure, landing in destinations far and wide. Larry was able to realize a life-long dream by making the journey to Israel, a treasured experience. The most special trips were annual: yearly family vacations and travelling with friends to football games and to Acapulco, where he was often found floating in the pool or relaxing with a book in hand. A true passion for Larry was his deep interest in history-from that of different cultures to military history, which he enjoyed reading about and watching via documentaries. Larry is survived by his beloved wife of 53 years, Maureen Lubel Wainer and his daughters, Kimberly Wainer Hoffman and Lori Wainer Berk, and his son-in-law, Seth Berk. Larry cherished and was deeply loved by his grandchildren, Spencer and Blake Hoffman and Jenna and Matthew Berk. He was preceded in death by his sister, Lois Wainer Bass. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 18, 2021, at Congregation Beth Yeshurun Cemetery. Donations may be made to Congregation Beth Yeshurun or a charity of choice.
