Jorge Guttin: a Life of Healing, Laughter, and Love Our father, Jorge Guttin, a distinguished cardiologist, devoted family man, and founder of the Scouts Israelitas de Mexico, passed away at the age of 80, leaving behind a legacy of healing and unwavering love that touched three countries and countless lives. Born with an adventurous spirit and a gift for laughter, our papi was a mischievous child who wreaked havoc in Mexico City alongside his two younger brothers, causing more than a few headaches for his parents, Sara Freidkes Guttin and Dr. Israel “Sosy” Guttin. After founding the Scouts Israelitas, our dad led excursions to Popocatépetl and hitchhiked through Mexico—adventures he would later regale us with, complete with tales of firecrackers and rattlesnakes. Jorge built a distinguished career in cardiology, rising from Chief Fellow in his class to his term as President of the Cardiac Society at Texas Heart Institute, where he became renowned for his exceptional clinical judgment. His patients loved him deeply, and his colleagues admired his unwavering dedication to compassionate care delivered with warmth and humor. Throughout his career, he saved countless lives—whether treating patients in Houston or serving as a physician in Israel during the Six Day War. Above all, our papi was a man who loved his family with his whole heart. He expressed this love through countless acts of devotion: supporting us while our mother, Selma, attended dental school; rising before dawn to prepare her bike before the MS150; and meticulously ensuring our cars were always safe. He nurtured our imaginations with bedtime stories of popcorn-eating whales, enchanted us with poems by Neruda and his own short stories, and filled us with laughter through his infectious humor. Papi lived for bringing joy to people: whether it was being the first on the dance floor at parties, telling jokes at dinner, or dressing up as Elijad on Pesach. We never got tired of his stories, even though we heard them endless times. Though he never quite passed on his passion for cars or classical music, we can still appreciate the elegance of his 1967 Cadillac DeVille, and we always hum along when we hear Vivaldi. Our dad was a true mensch. He gave us a Jewish education, brought us together for Jewish holidays (he had a joke about that, too), and always supported Jewish causes. He is survived by his loving wife, Selma; adoring daughters, Andrea and Daphna; caring son-in-law, Danny Beaser; rambunctious grandchildren, Paloma and Leon Lev; younger brothers, Isaac and Enrique; and his devoted fur-baby, Luna the poodle. He is also survived by his in-laws: Fey Mintz-Guttin, Salo & Ann Bialostozky, Ricky & Judy Bialostozky, Susy & Abram Kajomovitz, Alex & Lilian Bialostozky, Becky Guttin, and Vicky & Michael Richker, as well as his many loving nieces and nephews. We will forever carry forward the legacy of compassion, laughter, and profound love he showed to everyone fortunate enough to meet him. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 pm on Sunday, January 18, 2026, in the Sophia & Jack Bender Memorial Chapel at Beth Yeshurun Post Oak Cemetery, 7445 Awty School Lane, Houston, Texas 77055. Shiva will be announced following the funeral service. Our family would like to give special thanks to Angelina Cruz, who has loved and cared for the Guttins through five generations and 42 years.
