Janice Gitter Goldstein

Janice Gitter Goldstein passed away on Thursday, September 12th at the age of 93. Janice was born in New York but grew up in Miami Beach. Although she attended a business college, dancing was her real passion. She taught dancing and performed in iconic Miami Beach hotels as an opening act for such stars as Buddy Hackett and Peter Marshall. It was there that she met her husband, Ralph Goldstein, on a blind date. After a short courtship, they married and Janice moved to his hometown of Houston, where they joined Congregation Beth Yeshurun. Janice enjoyed being a stay-at-home mom for their two daughters, Bonnie and Leslee. She was very creative and spent late nights sewing, knitting, crocheting and needlepoint. Janice loved being a part of her daughters’ lives, often being the room mother when they were young. She was also a terrific baker and made their Meyerland home the meeting place for the girls’ friends with her home baked sweets. She immersed herself in the Houston Jewish Community, becoming an active member of Hadassah and the Beth Yeshurun Sisterhood, where she received the Woman of Valor award for her many years of volunteerism. She and Ralph traveled extensively, including many cruises with friends and cousins. They also enjoyed their season tickets to the local theaters. After Ralph passed away in 2007, she pivoted by moving to the Greenway Condominiums where she enjoyed a very active social life playing Mah Jongg and going out to dinner with her friends. She is predeceased by her parents, Helen and Sam Gitter, and her husband, Ralph. Surviving her are her daughters and their spouses, Bonnie and Gary Blumberg, and Leslee and Rob Bassman, and her granddaughters, Hayley Gerber and husband Jonathan, Ashley Bassman Kay and husband Jake, and Samantha Bassman. She adored being GG (great grandmother) to her two great grandsons, Max and Jonah Gerber. A funeral service was held on Sunday, September 15, 2024, in The Sophia and Jack Bender Memorial Chapel at Beth Yeshurun Post Oak Cemetery, 7445 Awty School Ln., Houston, TX 77055.
