Born in Houston, Texas on May 15, 1949, to Jack and Gale Zubowski, she brought an infectious joy and unmistakable style to every room she entered. Mimi possessed an extraordinary gift for creating beauty in unexpected ways. Her signature style was legendary – she could take pieces that had no business being together and transform them into something magnificent. This talent extended far beyond fashion into every aspect of her life, where she consistently turned the ordinary into the extraordinary. Known for her refreshingly honest opinions delivered with both wisdom and warmth, Mimi never hesitated to tell you the truth – but always with a solution in hand. When recently asked by a cousin if her skin was glowing, Mimi responded with characteristic directness: "No, it doesn't. But here are the products to make it glow." This blend of candor and helpfulness made her the go-to person for everything from fashion advice to life decisions. Helene's entrepreneurial spirit was as boundless as her creativity. From running "Figure it Out," an aerobics studio in the 1980s, to building a successful 25-year career as a real estate agent in Palm Springs, she approached every venture with innovation and determination. When her 25-year marriage ended, she exemplified her fearless nature by moving to Palm Springs without knowing a soul – and proceeded to build a vibrant new life from scratch. Her mantra was simple: anything is possible. She didn't just believe it; she lived it. As "Mimi" to her beloved granddaughters, Ava, Stella, and Lexi, she created magic through what became known as "Camp Mimi" – unforgettable sleepovers filled with makeup sessions, wig trying, and jewelry dress-up parties that will forever remain in their hearts. She was a master of the meaningful small gesture – leaving a single flower that would bloom days later, finding the perfect unexpected gift for someone, or making a call at just the right moment to offer encouragement. Helene's competitive spirit and joy for life shone brightly on the pickle ball court, where she was not only a skilled player but a passionate instructor to her friends. With her characteristic blend of loving bossiness and encouragement, she helped countless friends improve their game, coaching them with the same enthusiasm she brought to everything in life. Her love for mahjong matched her pickle ball passion, and she delighted in teaching the game to friends, creating a community around both activities. Fittingly, she spent her final day doing what she loved most – playing pickle ball and mahjong with dear friends, going out on the highest of notes. Helene was a loving sister to Paul and sister-in-law Randi, and a devoted mother to her sons, Zach and Alex, whom she called regularly with unwavering encouragement and the reminder that they could achieve anything they set their minds to. Her relationship with her daughter-in-law, Talla, was a source of great joy and friendship. Her connection to her many cousins in Houston remained strong throughout her life. Her warmth and generosity were legendary, as were her parties – always extravagant affairs filled with laughter, music, good food, and lively conversation. Her home was a haven where everyone felt welcome and cherished, a reflection of her ability to create beauty and comfort wherever she went. If the world had more souls like Mimi, it would be a brighter, more stylish, and more honest place. Her superpower was making everyone around her believe in themselves as much as she believed in them. Her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched with her unique blend of style, honesty, generosity, and fearless spirit. Helene will be deeply missed by her family and friends, but her infectious belief that anything is possible will continue to inspire all who knew her. Her memory will forever be cherished through the countless stories, unexpected combinations, and cherished moments she created throughout her remarkable life. Funeral services was held at 2:00 pm on Friday, January 24, 2025 at in The Sophia and Jack Bender Memorial Chapel at Beth Yeshurun Post Oak Beth Cemetery, 7445 Awty School Lane, Houston, TX 77055.
