Gary Alan Greenfield

Gary Alan Greenfield passed away September 21 at 7:00 am in Houston, Texas at Houston Methodist Hospital. He is survived by his sister, Joyce Greenfield Bruk, his wife, Joyce Greenfield, his daughter and son-in-law, Melissa & Felix Castro, his son, David Flores Greenfield, and his son and daughter-in-law Ryan & Christine Greenfield. He is also survived by his loving grandchildren, Sydney & Carter Castro as well as his dog and best friend, Bailey. Gary was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1947 to Florence Anfang and David Greenfield. His father worked as a food supplier and owned a luncheonette. In his youth Gary enjoyed playing stickball, watching the New York Yankees on the black and white TV, and wishing he could be there in the stadium–hoping to catch a pop fly ball! Later Gary moved to Houston, TX for the prospect of opening a new business. He sought a new life as well as meeting new people. Having attended Long Island University in Political Science, Gary then tried his hand at entrepreneurship. He started G&S Custom Draperies with his partner Steve Addiego, and it turned into a cornerstone of the Houston interior design community. Joyce and Gary met on a blind date. As a recent transplant from New York, Joyce accepted the date and they made plans for dinner. Joyce, just getting settled herself, offered to make a chicken dinner for Gary, not knowing that he detested chicken. However, Joyce’s attempt at cooking and her personality won Gary over, and the rest is history. The absence of his unique brand of humor and his ability to be honest with everyone he met will forever be a weight upon us all. He had a wonderful sense of humor yet he never tolerated fools. He had the softest heart for children, his own or any other children he encountered. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. The graveside service was held on Sunday, September 24, 2023 at 3:00pm at Congregation Beth Israel Memorial Garden at 1101 Antoine Dr., Houston, TX 77055. Due to Yom Kippur, a brief shiva was held immediately following the funeral.
