Celine Kaplan

Celine Kaplan, born January 5, 1932, passed away on November 24, 2023, surrounded by her family. A life well-lived and well-loved has sadly come to an end. Born to Morris and Louise Seligman in El Campo, Texas; she spent a very happy childhood in Edna, Texas. At the age of 15, she enrolled at the University of Texas in Austin. Shortly thereafter, Celine met her future husband, Charles Kaplan, on a blind date on New Year’s Day 1948, leading to their incredible 61-year marriage. They loved each other unconditionally, and their marriage set an example for their children. Celine gave and received the love and affection of four children and their spouses, nine grandchildren and their spouses, and six great grandchildren. She was always working the phones, calling to check on their studies, work, and activities. For over 30 years, Celine loved working in the Neiman Marcus Children's Department, outfitting generations of Houstonians. She cherished spending weekends at the family beach house in Galveston with Charles, making lifelong memories while cooking the finest gumbo in the South (roux from scratch!). Celine loved the City of Houston and all it had to offer. She was a lifelong ticket holder to the ballet, symphony, and Broadway series. She always kept her pulse on the culinary scene, finding the latest and greatest restaurants to try with her friends and family. Celine also gave back to the Greater Houston community. She volunteered her time with numerous organizations, including over 5,000 hours at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Celine was so fortunate to have wonderful, loyal friends, many of whom she had been close to for 75 years. She was predeceased by her beloved Charles and brother, David Seligman. Celine is survived by her children: Lee Kaplan, and wife, Diana Hudson; David Kaplan, and wife, Barbara; Jay Kaplan, and wife, Carolyn; and Nanette Putterman and husband, Barry. She is survived by her grandchildren Joanna (Pietro), Michael, Glynn, Layne, Jack (Jena), and Will (Queenie) Kaplan; Rebecca (Sam) Silberman, Matthew (Lindsey) Putterman, and Jennifer Putterman; and six great-grandchildren. Thank you to Dr. Stuart Solomon for his dedicated and compassionate care, enabling Celine to have a quality life until the very end. We are also thankful for the nurses and physicians at Houston Methodist who provided such wonderful care. A heartfelt thanks to her caregivers Tonya, Juanice, Robinette, and all the others who helped Celine maintain a joyous life. A memorial service was held at 4 PM on Sunday, November 26, in the Barish Sanctuary of Congregation Emanu El, 1500 Sunset Blvd., Houston, TX, 77005. Celine was a serene warrior. She leaves this world, her family, and friends in a better place. A life well-lived, a life well-done.
