Betsy Kamins Atlas

Betsy Kamins Atlas, 90, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her daughters on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, in Houston, Texas. Betsy was born on July 10, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York to the late Samuel and Ruth (Barsky) Kamins. She and her family lived in New York, Virginia, Pennsylvania and circled back to Brooklyn where she graduated from James Madison High School. Piano was Betsy’s passion. She excelled at playing classical piano and as a young girl played at Carnegie Hall. She had her own residential real estate company for 50 + years in addition to owning a printing company for many years. Betsy was a great Mahjong, Rummikub, and Bridge player and even painted some beautiful oil paintings in her life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Kamins and Ruth Barsky Kamins, and her brother, George D. Kamins. She is survived by her daughters, Julie Orlin Pickett (Dennis) and Cindy Orlin Ely; her grandchildren, Jennifer Pickett Hertz (Brian), Jared Pickett (Spencer), and Jacob Pickett; and her great-grandchildren, Barrett and Sullivan Hertz. She is also survived by her nephews and nieces, Ricky Kamins, Janna Kamins Wiener (Marshall), Duane Kamins (Anna-Lee), Steven Kamins (Lori), Michael Kamins, and Anna Kamins. Betsy lived life not only for herself but for her daughters and spending special times with her grandchildren and great grandchildren for birthdays, holidays, sleepovers, and so much more. Some great times for her were playing Mahjong at her granddaughter's home after every holiday meal. Our mother was a master at the game. The family extends its heartfelt appreciation to the following groups and people: Brookdale Galleria assisted living team and Brookdale home healthcare team as well as the dining and kitchen crew from the director to the wait staff and also her private duty team, led by Carla Jackson. We want to acknowledge her financial advisor, Juan, for being available whenever his assistance was needed. A graveside service will take place on Friday, October 31, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Emanu El Memorial Park, 8341 Bissonnet Street, Houston, Texas 77074. In lieu of flowers the family encourages you to make a memorial donation to a foundation or charity of your choice.
