Bernard "Melvin" Kalmans

Born in Houston, Texas to Joe and Bertha Kalmans, Melvin was raised alongside his older siblings Buddy and Bernice as well as his younger sister Susie. He attended Texas A & M University where we received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree before returning to Houston which remained his lifelong home. He met Rosalind Baraban of Kansas City on a successful blind date which ultimately led to a marriage of over 65 years. Melvin began his career in the Houston Engineering community working for I.A. Naman and Associates in the early 1960s before starting his own business, then becoming partners with Rick George to create R.H. George and Associates. Thanks to his leadership over the next 39 years the firm grew tremendously, eventually becoming part of Salas O’Brien. He worked tirelessly until retiring at 83 and even with that, he took great pride in hearing about the continued growth that was in part, his legacy. But his greatest love and biggest sense of accomplishment was his family. He was extremely proud of all of them. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, friend and colleague and a role model to many. Melvin loved spending time with his family and friends (especially his group from San Jacinto High School), traveling (especially cruising), reading and watching sports. He built a life centered on being there for others including so many young engineers. He was the definition of selfless focusing his time and energy on others. Melvin was preceded in death by her parents Joe and Bertha Kalmans, his wife, Rosalind Kalmans, and his brother/sisters-in-law, Bernice and Rueben Edelstein, Phil and Irene Heintz and Buddy Kalmans. He is survived by his children, Stephanie and Andy Pelmoter, and Brad and Melissa Kalmans, his grandchildren, Andrew (Fiancée Lauren Blakely) and Matthew Kalmans, and Anna, Jack and Leo Pelmoter, his sister, Susie Simon (Sam), and sister/brothers-in-law, Joe Baraban (Mikki Donnelly), Bill Baraban (Joni) and Doris Kalmans, and stepbrother Bob Lewis. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews that he loved deeply. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, at 9:30 am in the Sophia & Jack Bender Memorial Chapel at Beth Yeshurun Post Oak Cemetery.
