Arlene Horwitz Sachs

Arlene Horwitz Sachs passed away on Friday, August 29, 2025, at home in Conroe, Texas. She was born on December 10, 1939, to the late Sadye and Charlie Horwitz in Houston. Arlene was a devoted wife to her husband of 67 years, a loving and proud mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and the most generous, kind, and loyal friend to countless people that crossed paths with her life. She always had a smile and a kind word for anyone she met. Arlene graduated from San Jacinto High School in 1956, and the day after graduation, she went to work for Prudential Insurance Company, where she worked for four years. Arlene met the love of her life, Sol Sachs, when she was just 13. They lived one block apart, and she knew they would spend their lives together. On January 28, 1958, they were married. In 1960, Arlene taught at Beth Yeshurun Preschool, after which she worked side by side with Sol for a company they purchased, Lewis Land Wholesale, for two years. Arlene then became office manager for two doctors. In 1986, Arlene and Sol moved to The Woodlands, where they purchased two stores and once again started a business together. Arlene worked tirelessly alongside Sol to create The Beverage Shoppe and make it a successful business. When they retired in 2005, they had a total of five stores. Also in 1986, Arlene found there was a small Jewish community called Congregation Beth Shalom of The Woodlands, and she fell in love with this community. Arlene quickly became an integral and important part of this synagogue, helping to build a pulpit, secure an ark, serving on the board of directors, co-founding Havurat Nashim women’s club, opened and ran the gift shop, and helped coordinate and cater One Shabbat Minyan’s. The list of Arlene’s contributions is too many to mention. In 1989, Arlene and Sol bought a chuppah for the synagogue, and their daughter Sheryl had the first wedding performed in the synagogue. In 1999, Arlene and Sol participated in the purchase of the synagogue’s new building and made numerous contributions to the new building still in use today. The synagogue was a central part of her life where she made so many lifelong friends, participated in weekly Shabbat services, and enjoyed attending choir practices with Sol. Even as her Alzheimer’s progressed, Arlene was a regular attendee and participant in the synagogue. The Beverage Shoppe business allowed Arlene and Sol both the opportunity to meet so many in The Woodlands community, which became their home. When they retired, Arlene and Sol were able to give back to their Woodlands community through their philanthropy and participation in the Pavillion Partners. Arlene was honored at one of the wine dinners sponsored by the Pavillion Partners for her service to the community. Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Sadye Horwitz, and her brother, David Horwitz. Arlene is survived by her husband, Sol Sachs; son, Ron (Maria) Sachs; daughter, Sheryl (Wally) Riffle; grandchildren, Jeremy Riffle, and Luke (Michele) Riffle; and great-grandchildren, Mallory, Grier, Sam, Caroline and Reagan. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Adath Emeth Cemetery, 1540 Sylvester Road, Houston, Texas 77009.
